Rupert Bain Obituary

Rupert F. Bain, 92, of Terryville, passed away Wednesday June 18, 2014 at Cook Willow Convalescent Home, Plymouth.

Rupert was born Aug. 6, 1921 in West Groton, VT. He was the son of the late Frederick and Nellie (Frost) Bain and pre-deceased by his lovely wife, Dorothy (Seeds) Bain and his sisters, Geneva Welch and Patricia Haskell. He is survived by his son, Gary Bain and his wife Donna of Auburn, ME, his daughters, Sally Bain-Picard and her husband John of Terryville with whom he made his home in his declining years and Janet King and her husband William of Bristol. He also leaves his sister, Beverly Hatch of Southington and his grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Bain, and several nieces and nephews.

Rupert enjoyed fishing for native brook trout. He spent his younger years in VT and NH and he knew every trout stream for miles around. He always believed what his grandfather told him, "If they were big enough to bite the hook, they were big enough to eat".

He moved to Bristol, CT in 1941 and was drafted for WWII, his unit was one of the units that liberated the concentrated camps, when the Germans surrendered he traveled all over Europe, (including Switzerland) while waiting for redeployment. For some God forsaken reason he joined the reserves and was soon drafted for the Korean War where he was up north of the 38th Parallel when the Chinese intervened. Rupert was awarded for his WWII service, The Good Conduct Medal, American Defense European Campaign (3 Stars), Bronze Star, Victory Medal, Occupation Medal and was in the 71st Div. Patton's 3rd Army. For Korea he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster (2 awards) for duty in Chipyong-Ni, The Purple Heart, The Original United Nations Medal with Korea B, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation (2 Awards).

It is Rupert's wish that his remains be cremated and his ashes to be buried in Plainville Cemetery along side his wife Dorothy. There will be no ceremony. Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396. www.scottfuneralhomeinc.com
