Richard Albert Mathes Jr, 82, of Terryville, CT (formerly Midlothian, VA) passed away surrounded by family on July 26, 2025, after bravely facing a long illness.
Richard was born October 4th, 1942, to Richard A. Mathes, Sr., and Norma B. Mathes (Battistoni) of Terryville, CT. Spending his early years in Terryville, Richard attended the University of Harford, earning a BS in Business Administration and later an MBA from the University of Connecticut. He served as Captain in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970 and was stationed at Maxwell and Gunther AFBs’, in Montgomery, AL. Through his working career, Richard worked in various marketing roles for Heublein Inc., (Hartford CT), and Ethyl Corporation and Tredegar Industries (Richmond, VA). For the last 25 years of his career, Richard was a Financial Advisor for Wells Fargo in Richmond, VA and Farmington, CT.
Richard is survived by his sons, Peter of New Hartford, CT and Thomas, his wife Courtney and grandchildren Owen and Riley of Aldie, VA. Richard also leaves behind his brother Donald Mathes, sister-in-law Mary Donovan Mathes of Terryville, CT, their son Paul Mathes and wife Bete of Manchester, CT. Richard had a large circle of cousins, extended family, and friends, that were the center of his life.
Richard’s joy in life came from spending time with family and friends. He loved family gatherings, big or small, and had a special connection with everyone. He was a uniter of generations, often reaching out with calls, letters, or notes. He held long friendships from his childhood staying close to friends from his early years in Terryville and Richmond, VA. No party was complete without fine food, and Richard loved to entertain. He loved the scenic countryside of Litchfield County, CT, boating and spending time in Mystic, CT, and Watch Hill, RI. He loved shooting sports and most recently was active with the Arthur Murray Dance studio in New Britain, CT. He was a proud member of the American Legion in Terryville, CT and supporter of Veteran’s causes. Richard was a man of deep faith,conviction,and optimism, and was affiliated with the following churches at different stages of his life: Terryville Congregational Church, Terryville, CT, North Congregational Church, New Hartford, CT, First Baptist Church, Richmond, VA, Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian, VA.
The family will be holding a private gathering to honor Richard’s life. Notes of condolence can be shared on the Scott’s Funeral Home link below.
