Matushka Anna (Tczap) Sovyrda
Anna was born in 1933 in Singac, New Jersey, the sixth of eight children.
She attended Passaic Valley High School graduating in 1950. She enjoyed singing in the choir and playing field hockey.
Anna worked as a secretary until her marriage in 1953 to Walter Sovyrda. Both continued to be active in the Orthodox Church of St John the Baptist in Little Falls NJ. Walter attended St, Vladimir’s Seminary and, in 1964, he was ordained to the priesthood as Father Vladimir. The family moved to their first parish in Old Forge, PA. They raised 5 children, while serving parishes in Auburn NY, Yonkers, NY, and Berlin, N. H.
After Fr. Vladimir’s passing in 1987, Matushka Anna moved briefly to Auburn NY then relocated to CT. where she resided in Terryville and Farmington. Anna worked in various insurance agencies as a secretary//clerk, learning to use the computer “in her old age”. She was an active member of SS Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church in Terryville. There, she was the main choir director until she “retired” at age 80. She was also a member of the Diocesan Council for the Diocese of New England and Financial Secretary of “One Stewards” for the Diocese.
Anna spent the last year and a half of her life in Amberwoods Memory Care facility where she peacefully passed on October 2 surrounded by family.
Anna will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 5th. Calling hours will begin at 8:00 am at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church, 34 Fairview Dr. Terryville, CT. A funeral service will follow at 8:30am. Internment will take place in St. Tikhon’s Cemetery, 175 St. Tikhons Rd. Waymart, PA beginning at 2:00. She is survived by her 2 younger brothers, Andrew and John Tczap, her five children and their families, Deb Wegh, Daria Gray, Larissa Sovyrda, Mark Sovyrda and Marina Leonidas. Anna is also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren!
Donations in Anna’s memory can be made to ST. Cyril and Methodius Church in Terryville, CT. in lieu of flowers. May her memory be eternal!
