Lester J. “Sonny” Markie, 85, of Plainville, husband of Judith (Vojtila) Markie, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Newtown Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. Born on March 27, 1937, in Bristol, son of the late Lester and Viola (Reed) Markie.
Sonny proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 42. He also worked for many years with Bristol Oil and Carpenter Construction. He was a past President and long-time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a member of the Terryville VFW Post No. 10240. When he wasn’t working, Sonny could be found in his garage tinkering away on something. He loved classic cars and his 1955 Willys-Jeep. He always had a cigar in his mouth. He loved camping at Burlingame Campground in RI and Klondike Campground in MA and spending time with his family.
Sonny leaves behind his loving wife, Judy; his son Jeffrey Markie of Bristol; his daughters, Sharon Dery and her husband Raymond of Bristol, Sandra Rinaldi of Largo, FL, Laurie Fonck of Bristol, and Lynn Salerno and her husband Peter of Oldsmar, FL; his step-sons, Jamie Dupont and his wife Rachel of Colchester and Wesley Dupont and his wife Lana of Cromwell; his brother William Markie and his wife Caroline of Southington; his sister Ann Vaughn and her husband Bob of New Mexico; his nephew who he raised like his son, Fred Seeley and his wife Jen of Bristol; his sisters-in-law, Carol Vojtila and her companion Fred Sidoti of Plainville, Linnette Vojtila of Plainville, Phyllis Vojtila of Brownsville, NY, Lois Markie of Oakville, and Linda Markie of Wolcott; 15 cherished grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and friends, and his beloved dog Keirwy. Besides his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his brothers, Larry and Donald Markie, his sisters, Rose Johnson and Arlene Chapin, and his granddaughter Amanda Dery.
Friends and family may visit the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St. Terryville on Wednesday, September 28, from 5-7 PM. Burial will be at the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, at the convenience of the family. www.scottfuneralhomeinc.com
