Janice Tompkins Obituary

Janice E. (Proch) Tompkins, 90, passed away peacefully on May 26th. She was the daughter of the late Albert L. and Ethel A.H. (Nyborg) Proch. Born in Bristol she grew up in the Pequabuck section of Plymouth and attended Terryville schools. While in High School she worked at the ticket window of the Cameo Theater in Bristol, and it was at that window that she met the love of her life, Donald Tompkins. They married a few years later and lived in Southington for nearly a decade before moving their family to Bristol.   They were married for forty-five years before Donald passed away in 1999. Janice was a direct descendant of one of the co-founders of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Terryville, and because of this she took her commitment to God and family very seriously. She and her husband and family were members of the First Congregational Church in Bristol, and she was very active with the Ladies Guild, and other groups there for many years. She held various bookkeeping jobs throughout her years for companies including Lands Clothier and Phelan Realty. When she retired in 1997 she was the Human Resources Manager for Palco Connector in Naugatuck.  She will be remembered for her independent spirit and her uninhibited laugh. She is survived by her sons Richard Tompkins (Linda) of Terryville, and Donald Tompkins Jr. of Middletown. Her daughters Deborah Tompkins of Plainville, and Jane Wolak of Plainville. Her grandchildren, David Tompkins and his fiancée Amber, Nicholas Tompkins and Ashley Wolak, several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her brother Richard Proch, a nephew Kevin Gelinas, and a niece Donna Gelinas. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Friday May 30, 2025 at the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Terryville. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Friday from 10:00 to 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church in Bristol Book of Remembrance, 31 Maple St., Bristol, CT 06010.
