Helen (Pirog) Sarachun, 95, of Terryville, widow of John Sarachun, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Bristol Hospital. She was born on January 21, 1927, in Bristol, daughter of the late Martin and Bernice (Dudek) Pirog.
Helen was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Terryville. Prior to her retirement, she was an Assistant Tax Collector for the Town of Plymouth.
Helen was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Anthony, and Peter Pirog, and her sisters, Katherine DiMeo, Caroline Macklosky, and Marie Paznokas.
Helen is survived by her son and caregiver John “Jay” Sarachun of Terryville, and nephews Louis (Mashpee MA) and Richard DiMeo (Simsbury, CT), William (Terryville, CT) and Martin Pirog (Belmont, NH), James Paznokas (The Woodlands, TX) and James Schermerhorn (Pasadena, CA) and nieces Kathy Sopczneski (Terryville, CT), Maureen Pirog (Bloomington, IN), Carol Burdine Fairfield, CT), Sharon (Barnstable, MA) and Bonnie Schermerhorn (Taos, NM) and Susan Pohlod (Bristol, CT).
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, 10 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church, Terryville. Entombment will be in the Holy Family Chapel Mausoleum in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Family and friends may visit the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St, from 9 AM until leaving for church.
Helen had a bunch of favorites! Number one was always Family. Husband John affectionately, “Johnny” and their dedicated caring son Jay. Next were Long Weekends in Manchester, Vermont with Johnny and Family Vacations in Maine. Shopping many years ago at G Fox in Hartford with flannel and plaid shirts at the top of the list. Traveling north to the Jennifer House in Great Barrington, and Country Curtains in Lee, Lenox, and Stockbridge Massachusetts for decorating their Terryville home. Celebrating the Holidays with a house full of family and friends. Religiously following the UConn Women’s Basketball Team. Sharing Lobster Rolls, Every Good Chocolate made by the finest Confectioners and avoiding whenever possible Vegetables! Secretly Baking Jewish Coffee Cake.
Lastly and most importantly:
Teaching whomever cared to learn how, TO LIVE THE GOOD LIFE!
Helen realized you only get one chance to accomplish this, and she certainly did!
