Ernest Cockayne Obituary

Ernest J Cockayne, 74, of Southington (formerly of Bristol), husband of Denise "Dee" (Stolfi)Cockayne, passed away Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at home. He was born November 5th, 1950, in Waterbury, son of the late Percy and Eugenia (Mazaika) Cockayne.

Ernie grew up in Terryville, CT and attended local schools, graduating from Terryville High School in 1968.  It was there that he met his wife, Dee.  In 1969, Ernie joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War era stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California.  Upon his discharge, he attended the University of Hartford, graduating with a degree in electronics.  He spent most of his working career in the computer industry, employed at Control Data Corp and Service Group.  Prior to his retirement, he was a home remodeler and then worked in a sales position at Dougles Overhead Doors.

Ernie and Dee purchased property in Southern Vermont, which over a 13-year period, they built a vacation home that they enjoyed for many years.  It was a labor of love, and he enjoyed completing much of the work himself.  His hobbies included snowmobiling, motorcycling, skiing, handyman projects and fishing.  He was always willing to assist his friends and family with anything utilizing his many skills and expertise.

Ernie was a car enthusiast and former member of the Bristol Auto Club.  During that time, he developed many relationships with friends that have continued throughout the years.  Ernie and Dee enjoyed going to cruise nights and car shows.  He was the proud owner of three Corvettes which he received numerous trophies for.

Following their retirement, Ernie and Dee enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Florida and South Carolina.

Besides his wife, Dee, of 52 years, Ernie leaves behind a son, Eric, daughter-in-law, Melissa, and grandson, Ethan, who he shared a special bond with.
