Edson “Coe” Cleaveland, a life-long resident of Plymouth, died unexpected but peacefully at home Monday, Dec. 19 on his 82nd birthday. He leaves behind three children and their spouses, Roger and Karen Cleaveland of Newington, Terri and Allen Rode of Thomaston and Mark and Jennifer Cleaveland of Summerville, S.C. He was predeceased by his daughter Sharon.
He also leaves behind four grandchildren in Jennifer Santa Fe, Joshua Cleaveland, Nicole Rode, Matt Rode and Caitlyn Rode as well as four great grandchildren in Jackson Santa Fe, Jayde Santa Fe, Luna Rode and Zander Rode. He’s survived by close friends Mike Conway, Dick Doyle, Dyanne Reynolds, Gary Belanger and ex-wife Linda Cleaveland.
He retired as the Town of Plymouth Highway superintendent after also working as a manufacturing foreman at Plume & Atwood in Thomaston and Wallace Barnes in Bristol. He also worked at Bunker Hill Pharmacy in Waterbury and was the owner/operator of Cleaveland’s Country Store in Plymouth which was founded by his parents, the late Edson and Florence Cleaveland.
When he wasn’t working, Coe loved to travel as he visited all 50 states, loved beaches and islands and went on 10 adventure trips with his sons. He was also a car lover, an avid racing fan and a food enthusiast who loved to frequent local establishments like Eagle’s Nest, Rozzis and Riverside.
Calling hours will be held Monday, December 26, at Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St, Terryville, from 4-6:30 PM with a service at 6:30. Family and friends are invited to a reception at 7 p.m. at the Terryville Polish Club, 35 Bushnell Street.
