Donald F. Ginnerty, 89, of Bristol, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at Ingraham Manor, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease and recently, cancer. He was the youngest son of the late James P. Ginnerty and Mary M. Griffin of Providence, RI. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan P. (Campbell) Ginnerty in 2013.
Born in Providence, RI, on October 17, 1935, Don was a 1958 graduate of Providence College, where he earned a business degree. He served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard Reserves. His professional career began at Household Finance in Seekonk, MA. In 1967, he moved his family from Bristol, Rhode Island to Bristol, Connecticut when he accepted a position as a commercial loan manager and later a vice president at Colonial Bank which became Bank of Boston. Don finished his banking career with Maritime Bank.
Beyond his professional life, Don had a passion for golf, horse racing at Saratoga, and card playing. He enjoyed the camaraderie of playing cribbage and cherished traveling with his wife, Joan. He coached his three boys at McCabe Waters Little League in the 1970’s and was president of Bingham Elementary School’s PTO. Don also volunteered as a band booster at Bristol Central High School. His love for these pastimes brought joy to his life and fond memories for his family and friends.
Don is survived by his loving family: son Donald Ginnerty of Bristol; son Michael and his wife Nancy Ginnerty of Bristol; son Kevin and his wife Gretchen Ginnerty of Raleigh, NC; daughter Kristine Zeman of Fairfax, VA., and brother Robert J. Ginnerty of Statesville, NC. He was also blessed with seven cherished grandchildren: Patrick, Alexander, Joseph, and Brian Ginnerty, Micaela Frost, Erin Causey, and Kaitlyn Zeman, two great-grandchildren: Abigail and Micah Frost, and fourteen nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (33 Queen Street) in Bristol at 11AM on November 8th, 2024. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery (522 Terryville Avenue) in Bristol, where Don will be laid to rest alongside his dear wife, Joan. www.scottfuneralhomeinc.com
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Don’s honor to the Ingraham Manor recreation fund or Bristol Hospital Hospice Care program. The Ginnerty family would like to thank the staff of Ingraham Manor for the wonderful care they provided to Don for the last several months.
