Michael Casimir Zalaski, of 34 Noch Lane, East Hartford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. He was born September 29, 1939 to the late Anna (Dul) and Joseph Zalaski Sr. of Terryville. Mike attended Terryville High School where he participated in track, the Glee Club, and the Leadership Club. He graduated in 1959 and was then employed by Chapman Machine in Terryville. As a young adult, Mike resided at Southbury Training School, before transitioning to various group homes in the Greater Hartford area. His most recent years were spent at Brown St. Group Home in Bloomfield, CT., and Noch Lane Group Home where Mike received hospice care until his passing. Mike was a reliable employee who worked at various community workshops. He enjoyed working with his hands and was quietly observant, with a keen ability to watch and learn. Mike often used this skill to create mischief and entertain himself by stealing an unattended mug of coffee, sneaking off to the pool, and, in one instance, taking his brother's car for a cruise around the block. Mike was a great swimmer and spent many vacations at Misquamicut Beach or relaxing by the Farmington River. He was a lover of cigars and good food. He enjoyed his mother's homemade pierogi, hearty soups, and good bread, but nothing could top his love for McDonald's hamburgers. Mike was an exemplary parishioner and attended mass regularly. He enjoyed reading his Bible, which he continued to do with his caretaker, Debra Batchelor, until just before his death. Michael leaves to remember him, a brother, Joseph Zalaski, Jr., and his wife Lois, of Terryville, a sister, Henrietta Donato, and her husband, Joseph, of Avon, a sister, Lillian Krinitsky of Terryville, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the CT Department of Developmental Services, Key Services, and Masonicare Partners for their extraordinary care and dedication. A private service will be arranged by Scott Funeral Home at the convenience of the family. Donations in Michael's memory can be made to Masonicare Partners, 111 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT. 06108, and to The Animal Rescue Foundation, 366 Main St, Terryville, CT. 06786. www.scottfuneralhomeinc.com
