Melvin Zeiner entered into God's hands on November 3, 2007 after a brief illness.Mel was born February 2, 1937 in Torrington, CT to Elmer and Gertrude (Ives) Zeiner.Mel was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, Valley Forge PA and the University of Hartford.He served 10 years in the Military National Guard.Mel devoted his professional career to insurance, spending 28 years with Cigna and 15 years with National Grange Mutual.Mel held a wide variety of executive leadership positions and was considered an expert in the field of underwriting.Mel was president of Illinois Union Insurance Company and career long member of Association of Insurance Executives and Big I Insurance Association.Mel was a long time successful Babe Ruth baseball coach who used his skills to teach young men the value of hard work, strong character, and teamwork.Mel was president of Babe Ruth Baseball Association, member of the Kiwanis Club, Keene Country Club, Skyview Country Club and Citrus Hills Country Club.In retirement, Mel could be found on the golf course 6 days a week, traveling with his family, wood working and reading his favorite novels. Mel is survived by his wife of 49 years Sherry (O'Halloran) Zeiner, his sister Brenda Pelchar and husband Jim of Summerfield Florida and sister Marjorie Fecher and husband Don of Granger, Indiana; his son Larry Zeiner and wife Amy of Simsbury, CT and daughter Tammy McKane and husband Keith of Keene, NH.Mel is survived by his cherished grandchildren Michael Zeiner, John Zeiner, Brett McKane, Ryan McKane and Erin McKane. Mel lived his life in accordance with the fundamental belief that he should be considerate of others; possess the highest sense of duty, honor, loyalty and courage.To hold high moral standards and strong character traits that made him a credit to his family and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday 11:00a.m at the Immaculate Conception Church, Terryville. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Terryville. Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville is assisting the family with arrangements.Donations can be made to the Hospice of Citrus County, Inverness, Florida in Mel's name.
